On June 6th KIPP Newark Collegiate Academy (NCA) students had one of the biggest nights of their lives as 125 seniors publicly announced where they will attend college! The big reveal took place at Montclair State University with friends, families, high school faculty, the KIPP NCA junior class, and the KIPP Through College Team (KTC) in full attendance.

As each senior mounted the stage, banners, tee-shirts, and hats announced their destinations. The evening concluded with an acknowledgement ceremony for the seniors to their younger peers, the rising senior class.

The KTC model focuses on preparing students to navigate the academic, social. and financial challenges they might encounter preparing for college – from entrance exams and applications to book expenses and campus life. The results speak to the program’s success: KIPP NJ sends more African-American students to four-year colleges than any other Newark high school, and their alumni are on track to graduate from college at 3.5 times the rate of their low-income peers. KIPP NCA is also one of five NJ high schools in the 80/80 club: 80 percent of African-Americans go to college, and 80 percent attend 4-year schools.

Students were accepted to a long list of colleges, too many to mention here. These schools include Boston College, Drexel, Duke, Georgetown, Notre Dame, NYU, Syracuse and the University of Kentucky, and many Historically Black Universities and Colleges (HBUC’s).
