Shafayeth Syed, a former 8th grade science teacher at William Davie Middle School in Hamilton Township (Ocean County), was arrested this morning after making threats against the middle school where he worked. He also made death threats against another teacher, according to charging documents. Syed was taken into custody in Wilmington, Delaware and is being held at Howard R. Young Correctional Institution under a $3,000 cash bond.

Syed, 27 years old, was fired three weeks ago from the middle school for causing “false public alarm.” He was also charged on March 8th with causing another false public alarm, terroristic threats, cyber-bullying, and contempt of court following alleged threats. More charges were filed for “defiant trespass” after, despite being banned from district property, he glued a newspaper article about his first arrest to the front door of the school.

On social media, Syed calls himself “Teacher of the Year.” There is no documentation supporting that claim.

In a video posted on his Facebook page, Syed said, “William Davies [the name of his former place of employment], I declare war.” He urged his eighth graders to turn the school into “Capitol Hill,” a reference to the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection in Washington, D.C. He also said his acts were attempts to stop cyber-bullying. Syed raps under the name Sha Vlimpse and says the charges are a result of racial discrimination. He told 6ABC  that he posted “you gonna die” on a bathroom video but said it was a rap lyric and not directed at a particular person. The Star-Ledger just reported he wrote on a post, “Oh, oh shut down the school, Mr. Syed making true public promises, bombs away I am (expletive) Oppenheimer. He gon die and Allah will let him burn in hell, Alahu Akbar.”
